14. The Art of the Vandelay

The title has nothing to do with the blog post, which, unlike this sentence, is going to be short and to the point. I just was resisting the urge to re-watch all nine seasons of Seinfeld for the second time in a year. The post also happens to be about art.

I didn’t get much of my own writing this week. Instead, my brain was on loan to finish a piece on Oakland artist Thailan When and two(!!!) articles on the Oakland Museum of California’s Hella Feminist exhibit (1) (2).

Spending a lot of time in artistic spaces made me think of my own creativity. It’s not a new subject for me to write about. But there’s something about seeing artists work for months or even years to create something that put my own creation process in perspective. Most of my articles don’t take that long to write. Furthermore, the best articles I’ve written came from ideas I’ve had after pondering specific subjects over a long period of time.

While it’s tempting to get into a cycle of frequent, consistent output, it’s good to remember that time is a necessary condition for most good things. And so next week, I hope to report that I took some control back over my brain and wrote some words for myself and for the fantastic readers of pH Balance.

This Week’s Top 3

  • Christopher Nolan‘s Batman Trilogy 🦇 – No, I am not late to the party: I’ve seen them before. As a child. I highly recommend a rewatch after eighteen years of age.
  • Green Day, especially this cover 🎸 – they’re doing some festivals this summer, which is amazing. I hope to have enough to energy to attend a festival when I’m their age.
  • Crooked City Cider 🍺 – I worked my second show here this week, and the bartender remembered me, which is always a nice feeling. If you go, try the Chai cider and blueberry pizza (They’re both delicious, I promise).
